Belongs to the class of sulphonylurea and possesses high beta cell selectivity and a unique ABC (amino aza bicyclo octane) ring.
Gliclazide stimulates insulin secretion through pancreatic beta cells. In the long term, this combination reduces hepatic gluconeogenesis and increases insulin effects by acting as receptor or post receptor sites. The unique ABC ring ensures free radical scavenging property, reduces oxidative stress, reverses endothelial dysfunction and has a potent anti-atherogenic effect in type II diabetes mellitus. Very beneficial in type II diabetes with ischemic heart disease.
